Abstract

A NEW EVALUATION OF ANATOLIAN ALEVISM WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF HURUFI-BEKTASHI RELATION
İsmailism is a belief system which surrounds Anatolia including Syria and Azerbaijan. Thus, it inevitably has influenced the other belief systems in Anatolia. Anatolian Alevi Bektashi religious communities for instance, resemble Nizari İsmailis in terms of beliefs regarding hulul (antropoformism), reincarnation and afterlife, besides practices like men and women praying together. Specifically Babagan Bektashis resemble Nizari İsmailis in respect to both belief and more specically namaz. Similarities between the namaz versions of Nizari İsmailis and Babagan Bektashis are time, pattern and content of namaz. When Nizari İsmailis gained ground in Hurufi sect which proceeded to be affective in the Balkans, Babagan Bektashis were inspired by İsmailism. Namaz practices of Babagan Bektashi residents of Hacıdede and Şeyhkoyun villages are significant with regard to having the characteristics of Nizari İsmailism.
