SHADOW ARCHETYPE IN THE NOVEL YEDİNCİ GÜN
ABSTRACT In the Seventh Day of İhsan Oktay Anar, one example of postmodern novel, the reason of human’s existence in this world is aimed to reveal. The novel consists of three parts titled “Father - Son - Ghost”. The last part of the novel represents the metafiction, and in this part, along with the protagonist İhsan Sait’s (Ghost) self-discovery challenge, it is narrated that he wrote this novel in six days and in the seventh day, he took a rest. With his redemptionn, he wishes for his rebirth. In order to achieve this, he needs to be set free of being captive of “his shadow” and reach his essence. “The shadow”, being one of the basic archetypes, is the human impersonating version of individual unconsciousness according to Jung. Including the most despicable qualifications of human characteristics, it leads the dark side of us to come out. Human being, occasionally, could not be able to control his shadow, and went after the forbidden one. While continuing his own existence, in order to achieve his goal, he became slave of his passion, desire and arrogance. In the novel, İhsan Sait is to think that character is endlessly gentle, even immortal. For this reason he thinks he can reach all his wishes and drives him and his surroundings to disasters. İhsan Sait, who claims to be God what will happen to the end of people like ironically the event is fused with the pattern. By İhsan Sait who is slave of his shadow, the author states that the human who has arrogant, passionate and savage wishes would certainly get aware of his mistakes and yet pay a price. In this study, the adventures of İhsan Sait and the other characters’ are narrated, and it is intended to verbalize how archetypal analysis methods are used in the examination of postmodern narrations targeting the inner worlds of individuals.
