Religious Extremism (Ghuluww), Sufism and Sunnism in Safavid Iran (1501-1722)
The study of the Safavid History in Turkey, and Turkish translation of both primary and secondary sources on the subject are important for several reasons. The deep impact of the Safavids on Anatolian Alevis, their continuous rivalry with the Ottomans and finally, the important role of Turks in the Safavid army and administration are among the factors motivating us to focus on this subject. Furthermore, we believe it is necessary to promote Safavid studies in Turkey, as it is essential for better understanding of the geo-political changes in our region since the 16th century. The religious policy of the Safavid State is of particular importance in this regard. There is little Turkish scholarship on this subject, despite some studies and publications (especially recently) by Turkish scholars. We therefore decided to provide Turkish translation of this comprehensive article by an American scholar of Iranian origin S. A. Arjomand, who dedicated his years to elucidating this topic. In the current paper, the author sheds light on the process of suppression of “religious extremism,” called Ghuluww, Sufism and Sunnism, for the purposes of conversion to Shi’ism from the establishment of Safavid State to its fall.
